We wish Mr Brian Spring, Ms Fionnuala O’ Keefe and Ms Fiona Burke well in their new teaching positions. We thank them for their contribution to the school and for their support and kindness during their time working in Crusheen N.S.

A tribute to Mr Gerry Kearney
We look forward to celebrating our former Principal’s contribution to our school over many years. In conjunction with the local community we hope to get involved in a celebratory event to say a big thank you to Mr Kearney for his many years of dedication to Crusheen N.S. A date for this event which will take place sometime in November has yet to be finalised. We will keep you informed in due course.

We are all looking forward to getting involved with the local community to organise a mass and celebratory function to mark Mrs Galvin’s leaving our school and thank her for all her efforts in Crusheen N.S. down through the years. These events will take place on Friday November 7th.

School Mass
On Tuesday 16th September we celebrated a “Beginning of School Year Mass” in the school. During the celebration of mass we thanked God for the many blessings He has given to us. We prayed for help and guidance during the coming school year. We would like to thank Fr. Ger Nash for celebrating the mass with us.

Outstanding Attendance
The overall attendance for the school year 2007-2008 was 91%, which is higher than the national average. The awards for outstanding attendance were presented during the week. The supreme awards went to the following students: Óisin O’Donnell, Diarmuid Mullins, Francesca Arcaina, Johnny Broderick, Lauren Monnickendam, Eleanor Leonard and Hannah Leonard.
Awards for just one days absence went to the following students: Emma Burke, Laura Leonard, Cora Scanlon and Arron Monnickendam.
Awards for just two days absence from school went to the following students: Aaron Forde, Tara O’Grady, Niamh Turner, Aoife Burke, Aislinn Mullins, Callum Turner, Kailey Arcaina and Sarah O’ Connor.

Well done to all concerned and indeed to all our pupils for their excellent attendance record.

Labelling of School Uniform
Please ensure that your child’s uniform and school tracksuit is clearly labelled with the child’s name. This will allow easy identification of school uniforms that are left out in the playground at break times and will minimise the amount of lost property that accumulates in the school each year.

Camogie Skills
A ten week course in camogie skills is currently ongoing every Friday for girls from 3rd to 6th classes. This course is run by one of our own past pupils, Carina Roseingrave, ably assisted by Ms O’Grady. We would like to extend our gratitude to both ladies for sharing their talents and expertise.

Carina is on the Clare Ladies Junior Camogie team who were recently triumphant in the All-Ireland Ladies Junior Camogie Championship Final in Croke Park. Carina brought the All Ireland Junior Camogie Trophy with her to show to her many fans here in Crusheen N.S. Here she is photographed with the girls from 3rd to 6th classes.

Football Season Begins
Our boy’s football team played Lisdoonvarna N.S. in a very sporting game last Friday 19th September. At the final whistle, Lisdoonvarna came out winners but the Crusheen boys put up a gallant fight. The final score was 3-6 to 1-0.

Notable players for Crusheen were Arron Monnickendam in defence, Dylan Goodman, Cillian Mullins and Colin Waters in mid-field and Stephen O’Halloran in forwards who scored our only goal.

Team: John Roseingrave, Cillian Mullins, Dylan Goodman, Brian McDonagh, Arron Monnickendam, Colm McNamara, Colin Waters, Joseph Copley, Mark Kearney, Gavin O’Brien, Stephen O’Halloran.

Subs: Ross Hayes, Conor Cleary, Callum Turner, Christopher McDonagh, Martin McMahon, David Dyksy, Andrew Mulligan, Breffni Horner and Mark Hassett.

(Thank you Mark, for your help with this report.)

Community Games
Congratulations to Niamh Moloney (6th class) who has been chosen for a Community Games Art All Star Award. Niamh has represented her parish and school in various art competitions over the years and has done us all proud in her achievements. Niamh will receive her award in the West County Hotel in Ennis on October 17th.

Green School
Thanks once again to Noelle Horner for her help and assistance with our organic garden last school year. We look forward to working with her again this year. We are currently in the process of digging the weeds and doing a general tidy up before covering the soil for the winter months. We hope to go planting again in spring time.

Recycling
Recycling continues in the school. Boxes are available in each classroom to collect cards, paper, plastic containers, batteries. Our litter wardens are out and about regularly to ensure the school grounds are kept neat and litter free. Please be mindful to keep Crusheen village and our school tidy and free from litter!
Green Tip: Use reusable containers in lunch boxes. Then wash and re-use them the following day.

Parents Council
Many thanks to those on the Parents’ Council and to everyone who supported the bag packing fund raiser which took place in Dunne’s Stores this week end. Your support for the school is greatly appreciated.

School Calendar

Hallowe’en Break: Closed from Monday 27th October to Friday 31st Oct. inclusive.

Christmas Holidays: Closing 23rd Dec. Re-opening 7th Jan.

February Mid Term- Closed February 16th-20th inclusive

St. Patrick’s Day –March 17th closed

Easter Holidays- Closed from April 6th to 17th inclusive

Summer holidays- School will close on June 30th for the Summer holidays.

There is one more day of holidays that has yet to be confirmed.

Please consult with the school calendar when planning your holidays in an effort to keep pupil absences to a minimum. Whilst 20 days is the maximum period of absence allowed, 18 days represents 1/10 of a school year and this would impact greatly on a child’s educational development. Therefore every effort to ensure full attendance is appreciated. Please refer to the Education Welfare Act 2000.

Education Welfare Act 2000

The school is obliged by legislation to inform the Education Welfare Officer when a child has been absent for 20 days in a school year. If your child is absent from school it is necessary for you to provide the following information in writing to the class teacher.
• The date(s) in which your child was absent
• The reason for his/her absence

Absence notes are provided at the back of the Homework Diary, which can be used if needed.

Parental Guidance
A course for parents, Home School liaison & teachers. Venue: Clare Education Centre.
Tutor; Mary Carew
Commencing : To be confirmed subject to demand. Further details available from Clare Education Centre.

Supervision

Our school acknowledges that adequate supervision is intrinsic to the safety of children at school. The teachers accept that they have a duty of care over pupils during school hours.
The school will be open to receive pupils from 9:10am. No responsibility is accepted for pupils arriving in the school grounds before this time. Classes will commence each day at 9.20am. Pupils should arrive no later than 9.15am.

Classes will end at 2pm for Junior and Senior Infant classes and 3pm for all other classes. Please collect children promptly from school at the appropriate times. The school cannot accept responsibility for the care of children outside of school finishing times.

A yard supervision roster, which is compiled by Ms Cleary, is in operation in our school.

Autumn Clear out!
There will be a clearout of some old pieces of furniture from the school shed over the next few weeks. Included in the clear out, are some small Infant chairs and tables which are available for the taking! They may be suitable for a playroom etc. Please contact Ms. Brady before next Wednesday, October 1st if you think you might be interested in these.
