READING CHALLENGE
We have almost one more week to
go on our Reading Challenge. We ask children to have titles of all books
read written in to their Reading Logs for collection by teachers on
Wednesday, 6th June.
CAMOGIE
Our girls travelled to O'Callaghan's
Mills to play Bridgetown on May 15th for our first camogie game. It
proved to be our toughest assignment and we were well beaten. Sarah
Cunningham (who was our star player throughout the competition) scored
for us and Niamh Moloney brought off some great saves. Although beaten,
the girls played some great hurling, especially in the first half. On
the following day we played Mountshannon N.S. at home and this time
the girls emerged victorious by 4 goals to 2. Nicola, Eilis, Kim and
Claire had a goal each. We had to win our last game, against Bodyke
at home on May 23rd to qualify for the semi-final. Our prospects looked
good at half-time when we led by 2 goals to 1. Nicola scored a goal
and the other was an OG. Bodyke had other ideas and finished strongly
to take the game by 4 goals to 2. Caoimhe, Aine and Hannah played particularly
well in this game.

HURLING
After getting the better of Clooney
in the first round the boys faced the strongest team in the competition,
Gaelscoil Chiosog, in their second game. The game was played in Crusheen
on May the 8th and although the boys tried really hard they were well
beaten on the day. Luke Hayes (0-2) and Colin n Vaughan (0-1) were our
scorers. We needed to win the game against Connolly (at home on May
16th) and this proved to be one of the most exciting games in the competition.
Playing with the wind and hill in the first half the boys were very
much on top but fell behind early in the second half. They rallied again
and had levelled the game going into the final minute. Connolly were
awarded a close-in free, which they pointed for a 1 point victory. Final
score 5-6 to 6-2. Stephen Hurley and Cillein Mullins (1-0) each, and
Colin Vaughan (4-2) were our scorers. Colin was our top scorer throughout
the competition. The final game against Kilmaley at home on May 18th
had to be abandoned due to stormy weather. We led by 2-1 to nil at the
time. Domhnaill Rodgers and Colin Vaughan (1-0 each) and Colin Halpin
(0-1) were the scorers. Youen Horner played a captain's role throughout
and as well as those mentioned David Kearney, Dayle Gleeson and Colin
Waters also did well. James McNamara was captain for this game.
Ultan Kearns was our chief match reporter for the series.

COMPOST
WORKSHOP
On Monday, 21st May, pupils from
third to sixth class, along with parents attended a workshop on composting
in the Community Centre. We have been composting here at the school
for over five years and were delighted to get some tips on improving.
We are grateful to Clare Co. Council who sponsored the event.
SCHOOL
TOUR
All classes went on the outing
to the Adventure World Day Camp at the Sports Arena in UL on Wednesday.
The experience proved tremendously enjoyable. Canoeing, rafting, swimming
and "the eliminators" were particularly exciting. We regret
the fact that the buses arrived late in the morning. Arrangement for
transport were made on May 1st and the agreed departure time (suggested
by the bus company) was 8.30. This was further clarified with the company
on Thur. last by Adrienne. Miss Brady did a final check with them by
phone on Mon. The company has apologised for what they termed a breakdown
of communication in their systems.
GREEN TIP:
Do not overfill your kettle
- only boil as much water as you need.
