East Clare Cross
Country 2004
The East Clare Primary
Schools' Cross Country, which was held in Tulla on Wednesday last, attracted
over 800 athletes from 20 schools. It was a wonderful day in which 29
of our pupils (many of them for the first time) experienced, at first
hand, this great sport. In an era in which children's health and fitness
is very much in the news we must compliment our pupils and their parents
for a very positive attitude towards being active.
Races were for boys and girls U/8, U/11, and Over 11.

While taking part is obviously
the most important aspect of any sport, children also like to do well.
All our boys and girls acquitted themselves extremely well and in the
process brought home no less than 20 medals. There were some outstanding
performances. Rea Moloney ran a magnificent race to take individual
Gold in the boys Over 11 and with his team mates managed the team Gold
also. Lisa Perrill took a medal in the girls Over 11 with a creditable
9th place. In the boys U/11, Anthony Rodgers ran a great race to finish
in 8th place. The boys U/11 were third in the team event. Shane Loughrey
(13) and Gerry Roseingrave (14) were the other scoring members of the
team. Our U/8 girls were second in their team event. Rhiannon Pyatt
(7th), Caoimhe Horner (11th) and Niamh Moloney (15th) were our scoring
three. In the boys U/8 Colin Halpin came 6th. Well done to every boy
and girl. They deserve great credit.

The first round of the girls' Sevens
football was played in Crusheen on Tuesday week last. Four Teams - Kilfenora,
Connolly, Corofin and Crusheen - took part. Kilfenora qualified for
the next round. In our first game we lost to Corofin by 3-3 to 0-0.
Our second game was against Kilfenora. We were behind at half time by
1-3 to 0-0. Early in the second half, Lisa Perrill and Janette O'Donnell
managed to level matters with two great goals. Unfortunately we couldn't
hang on and Kilfenora finished on top. In our final game we defeated
Connolly by 4-3 to 1-1. Aoife Waters 1-1, Lisa Gallagher 2-0 and Janette
O'Donnell 1-2 were our scorers. Team: S. O'Doherty, A. Waters, P. O'Sullivan,

Changes
On Friday last we had a beautiful
thanksgiving Mass on the occasion of Josephine Kearney's leaving the
school after 18 years of dedicated service. Josephine wishes to say
a sincere thank you to pupils, parents, staff, Board of Management and
Parents' Association for the presentations made to her, the many expressions
of gratitude and goodwill she received and for the ceremony itself which
was so appropriate and well-organised.
We take this opportunity to welcome our new Resource Teacher, Marguerite
O'Leary. Marguerite is a graduate of Mary Immaculate College in Limerick
and is a native of Loughrea, Co. Galway. We wish Marguerite well and
hope that she enjoys many happy years with us.
