We look forward to celebrating the contribution of Mr Gerry Kearney to our school and community on Friday, March 6th. We invite everyone to join us for a special mass of thanksgiving at 7.00pm in Crusheen Church, followed by a celebratory reception in the Ballyline Inn at 8.00pm. All past pupils and parishioners are cordially invited to attend the night’s celebrations.

School Enrolment
School enrolment forms for September 2009 are now available from the school office.

Clare Museum Visit
On February 4th, 6th class made a worthwhile visit to Clare County Museum. There they enjoyed a wonderful presentation on World War 1, its history and also interesting artefacts from the war. Special thanks to Susan McMahon and Sharon Slattery for providing transport on the day.

Community Games Art
Well done to all pupils who competed in the local Community Games art competition. A special word of praise to those who represented their parish in the County Finals in the C.B.S. in Ennis. Once again, Niamh Moloney was victorious, winning the gold medal in the U.14 category while her classmate Kim Daffy won the bronze medal. It was a remarkable achievement by both girls and we wish Niamh all the very best when she represents her county in the finals in Athlone over the summer.

Books! Books! Books!
A big thank you to Pauline Whelan, librarian, who recently provided the school with a selection of second-hand library books for the children. We look forward to many enjoyable days of reading to come.

Swimming Classes

Revised Child Protection Guidelines recommend that two adults of the same gender supervise the separate boys’ and girls’ dressing rooms in the Ennis Leisure Centre. To this end, we require male volunteer(s) to assist Mr Gantley in supervising the boys’ dressing room. As is the norm, all those involved with children will be vetted. Swimming classes commence on Tuesday, April 21st for 10 consecutive Tuesdays, leaving the school at 10.30 am and arriving back at 12.30 pm approx.
If you are available to supervise for any/all of the following dates, please contact Ms Brady.

Dates for swimming: 21st, 28th April
5th, 12th, 19th, 26th May
2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd June

Green School
We were delighted to welcome Roisin Ni Gharbaith to the school last Wednesday. Roisin is employed by the Department of Transport and Clare County Council and she is supporting us in our efforts to earn our fifth Green Flag. To be awarded this flag we must build on the work we have already done in relation to litter and energy saving, as well as incorporating work on the new topic, transport. Roisin first met with the Green School Committee and she then spoke with the whole school. She outlined the measures we might all take in relation to reducing our carbon footprints. She launched a poster competition “My Journey to School” (closing date March 16th). She hopes to visit the school to meet with the parents on how they too might get involved. Our thanks to Nora Fogarty and the Patents’ Council who organised the event.

Book Week
Our biennial Book Week was once again a great hit with the children who were involved in a variety of book related activities. The children particularly enjoyed daily Buddy Reading, visits from both Eddie Lenihan and Seamus Power (Clare Library Services), the Book Fair and the highlight of the week the Book Character Parade. Together with commission from the Book Fair and a donation of books from Clare County Council the school acquired over E1,000 worth of books. Our sincere thanks to all parents for their continuing support in this event.

Energy Saving Tip
All electrical devices should be fully switched off when they are not being used especially over night. PC’s, laptops, printers and scanners should be set to ‘energy saving’ mode where they automatically use less energy when they are not being used throughout the day.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this
newsletter.
