MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Two years ago we were awarded the Green School Flag for the first time. Now it is time to reapply for the flag again. On Monday last, Joan Tarmey from Clare Co. Council, came to assess the work we have been doing to promote care for our environment. Joan is an assessor for Green Schools on behalf of An Taisce.
First she paid a visit to the Pump in the village to see the work we have done there. The Clare Champion took photos. Then she met with the pupils who are on our Green School committee. Lisa Gallagher, Jason Greene, Paul McNamara, Brian Rodgers, Roisin Rodgers and Aoife Waters together with Miss Cleary, Mrs Kearney, Mr. Kearney and Christine O'Doherty make up the committee. The pupils told Joan all about organizing the Green School programme and in particular the school policy on energy and how the organic garden was progressing. The committee explained that since Christmas we have collected 2,000 stamps, 1,400 cards and 350 batteries for recycling. Then Joan visited each classroom.
The infants told her about their traffic survey and how you can save energy by sharing vehicles. First and second class showed Joan how they made instruments from recyclable materials with Philip Gaston. They also talked about feeding the birds and their visit to the bottle banks at O'Malley's. Third and fourth class have been involved in a project to reduce the amount of water we use. They saved 600 litres in one week by placing half a brick in each toilet cistern in the school. They also explained about organizing the litter wardens and compost collection. Fifth and sixth class presented an electronic book on the work done at the pump. They also had a powerpoint presentation on Energy.
The good news is that Joan informed us before she left that she would be recommending that we keep the Green Flag for another 2 years. She was hugely impressed with everything she saw.

Who is Watching?

Recent email from Italy has the following comment: 'We have been looking together at your excellent website, (the best school site we have ever seen) which shows us a very happy and busy school community.' It's nice to hear kind and generous comments like the one quoted above. This is the second time in recent months that we have received such comments, the other coming from the U.S.A.
