ALL-STAR VISIT
As part of the school's
Social Personal and Health Education Programme, Sean McMahon, Clare's
outstanding All Star Hurler, was invited to give a talk to the children
in the school on Friday week last. Sean gave a truly inspiring talk
and covered a wide range of issues including diet, rest, alcohol and
the importance of getting plenty exercise and fresh air. Playing team
sports he said, was an excellent way of making friends and learning
important lessons for life. You learn to be a gracious winner and how
to take defeat in your stride. He urged the children to abandon the
T.V. and the Playstation and to get out in the fresh air to practise
their hurling skills. Getting plenty of rest is also important and he
recalled how he was told early on in his hurling career that the hours
of sleep before midnight were really important.
In terms of diet his message was simple - good wholesome food and plenty
of it. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and for him it
is usually weetabix, banana, brown bread and a glass of milk. On training
days he usually eats 2 dinners (no dessert). He recommended plenty of
potatoes, vegetables and meat and suggested that fizzy drinks, sweets,
crisps and fast food should be kept to a minimum. In a question and
answer session after his talk Sean told the children that he didn't
smoke and rarely took a drink. In fact he didn't drink alcohol until
he was 22 years old. Children had a whole lot of questions on various
games he played and on his match day routines, and his training. He
was open and honest with his replies and extremely generous with his
time. After the session he signed autographs, visited the junior classes
and playschool and posed for photographs.
