Skipathon
We enjoyed fabulous weather for our SKIPATHON on Thur. last. €427
euro (to date) has been raised by the children and this money will go
towards the running of the Special Olympics. Many thanks to parents/guardians
for their generosity, to staff for organising the SKIPATHON and also
to Trudy Davenport who has done great work at promoting skipping in
the school.
School Attendance
The Education Welfare Act became fully operational in July 2002. Under
the Act the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) was set up to
encourage and support regular school attendance. The school is now obliged
by law to inform the NEWB when a pupil has been absent for more than
20 days.
Generally speaking, attendance at school is excellent and those who
can't attend have good reasons for not doing so. Since September last
the pupils in first class have the best attendance record in the school,
averaging 98.75%. They are closely followed by fifth class at 96.47%
and third class at 95.70%.
Extraordinary Generosity
Each year our Confirmation
Class pupils donate a percentage of their confirmation money to a worthy
cause. Each donation is anonymous, given in a sealed blank envelope.
This year the class has contributed the princely sum of €186, and
the pupils have decided that the money should go towards humanitarian
aid for the people of Iraq (via Trocaire). We compliment our pupils
on their outstanding generosity.
Web Vote
Ireland will hold the presidency
of the EU in 2004. Pupils nationally have the opportunity of choosing
the official logo of the Irish Presidency. Pupils can choose from 3
possible logos. The logos and commentaries are on the Scoilnet website.
Our 5th and 6th class pupils voted on line for their choice on Friday
week last.
Basketball Final
Congratulations to the boys and girls from the school who took gold
and silver medals respectively at the County Community Games basketball
finals recently.
In the final of the third and fourth
class league, which finished two weeks ago, Trudy Perry's team had an
exciting 8-6 victory over Ethan O'Donnell's team. Conor Hayes' team
edged out Fiona O'Rourke's team in a play-off for third and fourth place.
Our thanks to past-pupil, Ailish O'Doherty, for her her help in organising
the league. Ailish is a transition year student at St. Joseph's, Tulla.
